2 Million Cats and Dogs Skinned Alive in China.

Today's dog and cat news is not pleasant but it must be known that this horrific practice is taking place right now in China. Now with the Olympics approaching is a time the world can let China know that that they find this incredibly cruel. I have found this article on the matter but you can visit PETA's website for more detail.

"So here are millions of helpless cats and dogs and no one will come to their rescue but we will travel there to watch the Olympic Games. It amazes me that we -a country of cat and dog lovers seem helpless to do anything to stop this horror. Of course, if we do have the will, then what can we do? Some of you may do what I and others will do - we will boycott the Olympics. I will not watch them on TV. I hope that a lot of advertizing dollars will be lost as a result. Sadly, I doubt that many will take this action. I find we commiserate for a whole minute and then -it's over and back to business as usual."

Dogs and Cats Get Along Just Fine

Today's dog and cat news features an article published in Live Science written by Stephan Reebs which is very interesting. It says:

"Humankind's two best friends don't always fight like cats and dogs, a new study shows. When living under the same roof, the alleged antagonists often get along swimmingly, in fact—especially if they're introduced at a young age.

Neta-li Feuerstein and her graduate advisor, Joseph Terkel of Tel Aviv University, surveyed 170 Israeli households with both a cat and a dog as pets. Two-thirds of the households reported an amicable relationship between the species. Indifference prevailed in a quarter, and less than a tenth reported fighting."

Cat and Dog Obesity Rates Rise - CatChannel.com

Today's dog and cat news brings you an article on a study that was recently conducted focusing on pet obesity.

According to the study, 53 percent of cats  and 43 percent of dogs were classified as overweight or obese by a veterinary healthcare provider; 19 percent of cats and 10 percent of dogs were found to be obese. It says:

“The pet data is closely paralleling that of humans,” Ward said. “We are becoming a nation of couch potatoes and lap potatoes.”

Promising New Treatment Helps Dogs and Cats Walk Again

In today's dog and cat news, I've found a great article for those who want to help their pets overcome the pain of congenital joint deformities, non-healing injuries and arthritis in pets.

Here's an excerpt from the article which starts off with a pet owner whose beloved dog has had hip dysplasia since he was young:

"A treatment Jones might be looking into is one practiced by a former Twin Falls resident and current Los Angeles veterinarian, Dr. Jarrold Bausman. Bausman was one of the first vets to be certified by Vet-Stem, a California company that isolates pets' stem cells for re-injection in"

Human panel judges cat food

In today's cat and dog news, I found this interesting article about the value of human cat food samplers. It says:

"In a new Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition paper, Dr. Pickering explains the potential value of having people rate cat foods. For example, he believes it might enable manufacturers to understand why your cat favors certain foods. While manufacturers conduct trials to see what felines prefer, it's difficult to know exactly which flavors or textures the kitties are responding to, he explains."

It is simply because cats can't verbalize what they like or dislike and humans do seem to rate cat food successfully..

Deseret News | Scaredy cats & dogs — Tips to keep your pets safe during fireworks season

In today's dog and cat news we've found an article on keeping your pets safe and calm during when fireworks are going off.The article is well worth a read - it's amazing home many additional dogs and cats shelters receive after fireworks have gone off.. They really do get so frightened with their amazing sense of hearing - that's much better than humans.

Doug Poindexter, president of the World Wide Pet Industry Association, said, "There are number of tips we have to try and help minimize stress by pets. First, bring your pets inside. Keep them in a room that is as sound resistant as possible" and then play music or the television there to drown out noise from fireworks. He added, "Make sure they have their favorite comfort items there — like toys and blankets — especially if you are going to leave them alone because you are going to a July Fourth party."As fireworks pop off, he suggests distracting pets to help keep them calm. "With my dog, I play catch with her favorite toy, or we play tug of war."
