New Japanese website reunites pet families

Ib todays dog and cat news I found this piece on a new Japanese website..

Like similar pet social networking sites in Japan and around the world, "Pedi" which went online last month and allows owners to create profiles for their pets that include their favorite foods and tricks, post photos and blogs, and exchange messages with other members.

I've included a link but unless you can read Japanese it won't make a whole lot of sense.. you get the drift though..

Pet Insurance

I was interested to read this dog and cat news article about pet insurance - our vet at dogs and cats had just responded to question on his thoughts on pet insurance so it was good timing. Here's snippet from this article -

"Accidents can lead to huge bills, with emergency animal hospitals charging up to $1000 a day to keep a cat or dog in intensive care.

Depending on the provider and the inclusions, pet policies range from $17 a month for basic cat cover and about $30 a month for basic dog cover up to about $50 a month for comprehensive cover with all the bells and whistles.

Ms Butler says the average claim coming through PetPlan is about $700, but it’s not uncommon to see bills of around $2000."

Humane Society, Comcast team up to advertise pets - mlive.com

This is a great move from one Humane Society in dog and cat news - Pet Adoptions On Demand,'' a new feature of Comcast cable television, will broadcasting clips of cats and dogs waiting to be adopted from Cascades Humane Society.

Seeing the pets on television is another way to generate interest in adoption, besides still photographs on the Humane Society's Web site, and the Citizen Patriot.

It's amazing the power of TV don't you think for these animals? A photo is different to seeing the pet in action - love at first sight for many I am sure..

Cats versus dogs at the vet - Pets - The Oregonian - OregonLive.com

In today's dog and cat news we are reminded of a typical story as posted in a U.S. news column - The Oregonian.. that even though there are many more cats to dogs. Writer Deb Wood says - "the total dollars spent on dog veterinary care is more than twice the amount spent on the cats. Almost 38 percent of owned cats never even see a veterinarian in the course of a year.

Make your own vow to take the same loving care of your cat that you do of your dog. Even if your cat doesn't want to go to the vet, take him or her to the doctor. Another great alternative is to call one of the mobile veterinary services to your home."

U.S. City to limit cats, dogs

This is what's happening in one U.S. State - they are passing a law limiting the number of cats and dogs to four each per residential property. This is expected to come up for passage at city council’s next meeting in May so will be interesting to see the results..

Bad news for me if i lived there with four cats and one dog - what would I do? What happens when someone already has more than the law is allowing?

Protesters support Bill to ban pet sales

In latest dog and cat news in Sydney yesterday around 70 people rallied in support of a bill to ban pet shops from selling kittens and puppies.

Doggie Rescue MD Monika Biernacki said the ban, if made law, would slash the estimated 60,000 dogs put down each year in New South Wales pounds and animal shelters. The number of cats put down every year because they were dumped and no alternative home could be found was much higher, Biernacki said.

These are some serious numbers don't you agreed. Monika goes on to say:

"We've just got to stop the over-breeding of animals. The kill rate is so high, each year it goes up and up, and groups like us are struggling to cope," she added. "It is also to stop the impulse buying, to get consumers a little bit more educated about what they are taking on instead of it being about a cute fluffy thing in the window."

Unwanted pets on rise because of economy..

Today's dog and cat news shows the sad truth around the worsening economies around the world - this is a typical story from the Palm Beach Post.. it could be anywhere..

Shelter managers here are blaming the economy saying that many pet owners say they simply can't afford to keep their dogs and cats anymore. They no longer have the money for veterinary care, or have lost their houses and are moving to apartments that require hefty pet-deposit fees. Others are moving out of state and say they can't take their animals with them.

It's terribly sad.

The article goes on to say that "the number of dogs and cats being housed at the shelter is at a record level. Last week, it was home to more than 400 pets - 100 more than it has ever housed before, Christos said. Small dogs were being kept in cages behind the front desk because the shelter was full."

It's a dog's life, not the cat's meow, study says

In today's dog and cat news, check out the fundings from this newly released study that found that "dogs not only get showered with more affection from their owners than cats, they're also significantly more likely to receive medical services such as vaccinations, regular health exams and preventive dental care."

The study was conducted with 2,000 dog and cat owners over three months. The spokeswoman belives that believes that the trend is partially linked to diminished views of cats in popular culture which is a shame. People also suggest that they feel dogs are more affection and fun to be with..

Anyway, see what you think:
